What Is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining is a trenchless repair method. Instead of digging up the damaged pipe and replacing it, a resin-saturated liner is installed inside the existing pipe and cured in place. It seals cracks, stops roots getting back in and restores the flow, creating a new pipe within the old one.

Nothing gets excavated. Your driveway, your lawn, your paving and your floor stay where they are. For a Sydney home with a sewer line running under a concrete drive or a mature garden, that difference is usually the whole decision.

It isn’t a patch or a temporary fix. Done properly it’s a structural repair, and the liners we install are backed by manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years.

How Pipe Relining Works

1. Camera inspection

A CCTV camera goes down the line to find exactly where the damage is, how long it runs and what caused it. You see the footage. Without this there’s no way to quote the job honestly, which is why we never price relining over the phone.

2. Clearing and preparation

The pipe is cleared with high pressure jetting, roots cut back and the inside walls scoured so the liner bonds properly. A liner installed over debris or root intrusion won’t last.

3. The liner goes in

A liner saturated with resin is drawn into position inside the damaged section and inflated so it presses tight against the existing pipe wall.

4. Curing

The resin hardens in place, forming a new structural pipe inside the old one. Once cured it’s jointless through the repaired section, which is why roots can’t find a way back in.

5. Final inspection

The camera goes back down so you can see the finished repair. You get the footage.

Relining or Digging It Up?

Both fix the problem. They’re very different jobs.

Excavation and replacement

The old way. The pipe is dug out and a new one laid. That means breaking up whatever sits above it, and then putting it back. On a line running under a concrete driveway, a paved courtyard or an established garden, the reinstatement often costs more than the plumbing did. It’s also days of disruption rather than hours.

Relining

No excavation, so nothing to reinstate. Most jobs are done in a day. The repaired section is jointless and sealed against roots. The catch is that it needs a pipe that’s still structurally there to line against.

When digging is still the answer

If a section has completely collapsed, or the line has dropped so far out of alignment that lining it would just preserve the fault, excavation is the honest recommendation. We’ll tell you that rather than selling you a liner that won’t solve it. The camera inspection is what decides it.

Signs You Might Need Pipe Relining

  • The same drain keeps blocking. Every few months, same spot. Something permanent is in there catching everything that flows past.
  • Roots come back on the cutter. If a plumber has cleared roots from your line before, they got in through a crack, and that crack is still there.
  • Sewage smell in the yard. Waste is escaping the pipe underground.
  • A patch of grass greener than everything around it. Something is feeding it.
  • Sinking or dipping ground along the line of the pipe, which can mean soil is washing into a break.
  • Multiple fixtures draining slowly even after the line has been cleared.
  • You’ve been quoted for excavation. Always worth a camera and a second opinion before anyone breaks concrete.

Most of these turn up first as a blocked drain or a blocked sewer. The blockage is the symptom. The camera finds out whether there’s something behind it.

What Pipe Relining Costs

It depends on the length of the damaged section, the diameter of the pipe, how accessible the line is and how bad the damage is. Anyone who quotes relining over the phone without seeing inside the pipe is guessing.

So we do it in order: camera inspection first, then a fixed price quote before any work begins. You see the footage the quote is based on, and you decide from there.

There is no call out fee, and pensioner discounts are available. No franchise fees loaded onto your invoice.

Worth weighing against the alternative: excavation costs include putting back whatever was above the pipe. A concrete driveway, paving or an established garden is rarely cheap to reinstate.

Warranty

Our pipe relining solutions are backed by manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years. The repaired section is jointless, which is what stops roots finding their way back in through the same crack.

What Our Customers Say

We called Cesco out to our building for a second opinion on an ongoing issue we have had with our strata’s plumbers. After a little bit of investigation, Cesco were able to identify the problem, which turned out to be significantly less of an issue than we were previously told. It pays to have trade people that you can trust aren’t trying to rip you off. These guys have saved us thousands of dollars and we will definitely be having them back!

Pipe Relining Questions

How long does pipe relining take?

Most residential jobs are done in a day, including the inspection, clearing and curing. Longer runs or multiple sections take more. You’ll be told before we start.

Do you have to dig anything up?

No. That’s the point of it. The work is done through existing access points, so your driveway, paving, lawn and floors stay where they are.

How long does a relined pipe last?

The liners we install carry manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years. It’s a structural repair, not a patch.

Can every pipe be relined?

Most can. A section that has completely collapsed, or a line that has dropped badly out of alignment, may need excavation instead. The camera inspection tells us which, and we’ll say so plainly rather than lining something that won’t hold.

Will roots come back?

Not through a relined section. The liner is jointless and sealed against the old pipe wall, so there’s no crack or loose joint for roots to find. Roots can still get into an unlined section further along, which is why the camera checks the whole run.

Does it reduce the size of the pipe?

Slightly, because the liner sits inside the existing pipe. In practice flow usually improves, because a smooth new liner moves water better than an old pipe full of root intrusion, cracks and rough joints.

How do I know I actually need it?

You see the footage. If the camera shows a cracked pipe with roots coming through, that’s what it shows. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too. A recurring blockage with no structural cause doesn’t need relining.

Another plumber quoted me to dig it up. Is relining cheaper?

Often, once you include putting back whatever was above the pipe. Worth getting a camera inspection and a fixed price before anyone breaks concrete.

Do you charge a call out fee?

No. You get a clear price before any work starts, and pensioner discounts are available.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Licence No. 299307c, licensed and insured in NSW.
