No Hot Water? Here’s What’s Usually Gone Wrong
Hot water systems rarely fail without warning. Most of the time there were signs for weeks and nobody noticed until the shower ran cold. These are the faults we see most often across Sydney homes.
The pilot light has gone out (gas systems)
The most common gas fault, and often the cheapest to fix. If it keeps going out after relighting, the thermocouple has usually failed. That’s a repair, not a replacement.
A failed heating element or thermostat (electric systems)
Electric systems heat water with an element controlled by a thermostat. When either fails you get lukewarm water, or none at all. Both are replaceable parts on most units.
The tank is leaking
Water pooling under the unit or rust streaking down the side usually means the tank itself has corroded. A leaking tank cannot be repaired. If you can see water, turn the system off and call us before it damages your floor or wall cavity.
The sacrificial anode has worn out
Every storage tank has an anode rod inside it that corrodes so the tank doesn’t. They last roughly five years. Replacing one on schedule can add years to a system’s life; leaving it means replacing the whole unit far earlier than you needed to.
Sediment build-up
Minerals settle at the bottom of the tank over time, sitting between the burner and the water. You’ll notice the system takes longer to heat, makes rumbling noises, or runs out sooner than it used to.
The system is simply old
Most storage systems last 8 to 12 years. Continuous flow units often last longer. Past that point, repairs start costing more than they’re worth.
Repair or Replace? How We Decide
We don’t sell you a new system when a part would do. When we arrive we diagnose the actual fault, tell you what it would cost to repair, and tell you honestly whether that’s worth doing.
Usually worth repairing: a failed thermocouple or pilot assembly, a faulty thermostat, a blown element, a leaking tempering valve, a worn anode, or a relief valve that’s weeping. On a system under about eight years old, these are straightforward fixes.
Usually worth replacing: a leaking tank, a system over about twelve years old, a unit that has already had two or three repairs, or one where the replacement parts cost more than half of a new system. There’s no sense putting good money into a tank that’s about to go.
Either way you get the price before we start, and the decision is yours.
Systems We Repair and Install
We work on all major Australian hot water brands, including Rheem, Rinnai, Bosch, Dux, Aquamax, Vulcan and Thermann. If your system isn’t on that list, ring us anyway — we’ve almost certainly worked on it.
Gas storage
A tank that keeps a set volume of water hot and ready. Cheaper to run than electric, and the most common setup in Sydney homes with mains gas. Recovery is quick, so they suit households that use a lot of hot water at once.
Continuous flow gas (instantaneous)
Heats water on demand rather than storing it, so you don’t run out and you’re not paying to keep a tank hot overnight. Wall-mounted and compact, which helps if space is tight. Best suited to homes with good gas pressure.
Electric storage
Straightforward, reliable, and the only option where there’s no mains gas. Running them on an off-peak tariff keeps costs down. Sizing matters more with electric, because recovery is slower than gas.
Solar hot water
We service and repair existing solar hot water systems, including the boosters and controllers that usually fail before the panels do.
Clear Pricing, No Surprises
There is no call out fee, and you get a clear price before any work begins. What the job costs depends on the size of the system, whether the existing connections can be reused, and how easy the installation point is to get to — so we diagnose it first, then tell you the price, then you decide.
Pensioner discounts are available. No franchise fees loaded onto your invoice, and no surprises when it arrives.
Signs Your Hot Water System Is On Its Way Out
- The water runs out faster than it used to. Sediment is taking up space that should hold hot water.
- Rusty or discoloured hot water. The tank lining is failing. Cold water running clear confirms it’s the system, not your pipes.
- Rumbling or popping from the tank. Sediment is being heated and moved around by the burner.
- Damp patches or rust around the base. A slow leak that will become a fast one.
- The temperature swings. Hot then cold in the same shower usually means a thermostat or valve on the way out.
- It’s over ten years old. Worth planning a replacement rather than waiting for a cold Sunday morning.
Spotting any of these early means replacing on your terms instead of in an emergency.

What Our Customers Say
Angelo provides an excellent service and always does his best to provide best value for money for his clients. He thinks outside the box to come up with the best solution — my insinkerator needed to be replaced and rather than just replacing the same one, he suggested I get a smaller one, saving money but still adequately meeting my needs. Would thoroughly recommend Cesco for any plumbing requirements.
— Jo Altit
We use Angelo’s team to service our vulnerable clients (aged and disabled) and we trust he will always do excellent work, does not overcharge and only does work that is required to be done. Can’t recommend them enough.

Hot Water Questions, Answered
How quickly can you get here?
We aim to be at your property fast, and we answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Because we’re locally based rather than a franchise, we’re not dispatching someone from the other side of Sydney.
My hot water has stopped. Is it an emergency?
If water is leaking from the tank, yes — turn the system off and ring us, because a leaking tank can do real damage to floors and wall cavities. If you simply have no hot water and nothing is leaking, it’s uncomfortable but it can usually wait until the morning.
What size hot water system do I need?
It depends on how many people are in the house and when you all use hot water. A system that’s too small runs out; one that’s too big costs more to buy and more to run. We’ll size it to your household rather than sell you the biggest unit on the truck.
How long does a replacement take?
A straightforward like-for-like swap is usually a few hours. It takes longer if we’re changing system type, moving the location, or if the existing connections need reworking. We’ll tell you what’s involved before we start.
Can I just replace it myself?
No. Hot water installation in NSW must be carried out by a licensed plumber, and gas work by a licensed gas fitter. Beyond the legal side, an incorrectly installed system can void your warranty and create a genuine scalding risk.
How long should a hot water system last?
Most storage systems last between 8 and 12 years. Continuous flow units often last longer. Replacing the sacrificial anode on schedule makes a real difference to how long you get.
Why is my hot water running out so quickly?
Usually sediment in the tank, a failing element or thermostat, or the system being undersized for the household. Sometimes it’s a faulty tempering valve mixing in too much cold. Worth diagnosing rather than guessing.
Do you charge a call out fee?
No. You get a clear price before any work starts, and pensioner discounts are available.
Are you licensed?
Yes. Licence No. 299307c, licensed and insured in NSW, with all gas work carried out by a licensed gas fitter.
Do you work on gas and electric?
Both, plus continuous flow. We also service and repair existing solar hot water systems.
